Instructions

Enter a brief post (50 words or less in true blog style). Your post is to include your research, process of learning, and how you intend to use your new skill in your future classrooms. Read your classmate's posts each week. Be sure to let us know what you are learning in each post. Keep track of where you have left off reading so that you don't have to read all of the entries again. If you need to edit your post, click on the little pencil below your post. Feel free to check in on Group 2 at any time, though http://learn-new-technology-2.blogspot.com/. Having two groups just keeps your reading load down a bit.

Be sure to use the tabs above for each week and not the Blog Archive on the right! <--------

  1. An inquiry from Giovanna Alaimo: Does anyone know much about "the cloud" as in cloud computing? If you do, could you contact me at gialaimo@seattleschool.org ?

Here are 2 links that I came across to start working on my tech project. I found them both very helpful to introduce the differences between older and newer versions of Excel (1st link) and to introduce how to use Excel (2nd link).

Teaching a video class makes this site/skill a perfect asset to my program. Coupled with www.schooltube.com, posting videos to sites with over a million users gives a great platform for students to share their work and take pride in the process/finished product

  4. I guess didn't quite understand this assignment on blogging. I have already created a blog called SSCC-Doug and invited my presentation day partner Amber and our instructor to it. I was coming here to learn how to invite others to it. I guess I'll just post a copy of my journal here?

I am glad these posts are being reviewed befor they are posted since they are viewable by the world. Can't we set this so only those in the class can read this??? If not, please take care to ensure only my first name appears in any of your comments ...

    Thanks much, Doug

  6. Here is the journal on my presentation day project I was keeping to get ready to blog:

    10/22/11
Based on the suggestion of our instructor, I reached out to Aurora in our class to see if we could team up to save time during our presentation day. She seems to be in favor of this and now we need to create a plan on how we work together. There isn't too much time remaining, presentation day is on the 12th ... just three weeks away.

    10/15/11
    Conducted research on Prezi
    Read Wikipedia article
Watched YouTube – Presentation introducing SOCRAIT learning system
    Posted this to the forum
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5kAOE3x1aY
    Read paper about Dwight School
Use a big cartoon? ... Big flow chart ...?
Learned we need to prepare presentation against the assignment outline

    10/9/11
    Created a Prezi account
    Watched three tutorials
    Learned how to:
    create a background
add text, tilt text, group text with frames
create a path and launch a presentation
load pictures, ppt slides and videos
    place text within images

    Next time
Get a better commencement march video
Create a floating pie chart ... for ppt and to float
Capture Prezi elements like zebra and tool pallet
    Establish goals for the presentation
Place “how to” examples at the end
    Tilting text
    Inserting videos or pictures
Altering the path of the presentation
Try packaging onto a thumb drive to run off line

  7. Hello, This is my very first blog!! I am researching Voice Technology (Podcasting). I honestly can't remember the last time I did a presentation, so this could be interesting...
At this point I have bounced around looking at and reading a lot of info, now I need to start organizing.

  8. Hello, I am learning how to create and use a wiki space (developed as a Google Docs template) in my classes. The lesson model is called Carousel Brainstorming from Summarization in any Subject, by Wormelli. I will use it as the equivalent of a gallery walk type lesson, where groups create content (frequently a summary), then other groups of students view and comment on those summaries. I need to learn how to use google docs to create the template.

  9. Hey everyone! I am researching a website/tool our school has a license to called TURNITIN.COM. The site is a plagarism and student assessment site students submit their writings to and get an originality report prior to submitting to their teach for a grade. It is also an online assessment site for teachers to choose from a bank of comments for quick and standard assessment on writing. The site also allows for anonymous peer editing. I haven't used it yet (I am new to the district) but am excited to see how it works. If it is a quick and simple as I hope I will definitely feel more confident assigning more writing in my CTE class. One of the reasons I don't assign a ton of writing is that the class (technical theatre) is so hands on that I don't have time to assess it. Here's to hoping this site is worth the money our school is shelling out for it! Chat with you all later!

  10. Wow, once again I find myself entering a new world...I so dislike blogging...does anyone else find it annoying in Facebook to be informed every time one of your friends enters a pizza parlor? I have offered to present cameras and video....hmmm...there are two groups...is this one mine?

  11. I'm busy, nose to the computer screen, researching emerging technologies for the classroom, when the newspaper hits my doorstep (thump!)--oops, my low-tech lover just divulged our secret relationship. The front cover announces a wave of anti-tech that has been brewing in California schools (among the technorati!) and I have to pause to let all this sink in. Here's the link: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/23/technology/at-waldorf-school-in-silicon-valley-technology-can-wait.html?pagewanted=all
Of course, I've been pro-technology since I started teaching digital art and design, but now I'm stopping to ask myself, "To what end should we be pushing the gadgetry and expensive software? What types of formative processes are we missing? Where's the sketchbook in design class?"

For our presentation day, I hope to find some interesting concepts and ideas to share, but I believe there's also going to be a cautionary message. Stay tuned.

  12. Just learned that the classmate I was to team up with is dropping the class. Ow well ... I hope it wasn't something I said. Today I hope to learn how to imbed a YouTube video into a "Prezi." I'm looking for a short sweet graduation video, you know, with the commencement march song. Let me know if you've a favorite... Doug

  13. Tim Wood:
This is my first time blogging. I'm a bit behind in class, but trying to catch up. I just started doing some work on my presentation topic today and found some lesson plans around live cams-web cams. This is mostly new to me, but am figuring it out.

  14. Giovanna Alaimo: When I first started looking at my topic, "Clouds", I found out thatwe need a gemail account for it to work on our computers. They have a hosting service and gmail hosts all this software forus. None of our students have a gmail account. We are not allowed to have a gmail account. Iasked how can our students meet the WA state technology goals if we cannot have access to the technology that is out there like the "Cloud". Hummm. What to do?

  15. I finished my project ...! Hope my classmates find it interesting. I fought and fought with my computer yesterday. So frustrating! But I broke through to the other side and I am finally done!
